teams with Broncos to study head injuries
University of Queensland researchers and Broncos Rugby League Club players
are putting their heads together to understand the injuries
which result when players use theirs.
And the study of head injuries on the playing field may lead to rule or coaching
changes. Professor Gina Geffen of the Psychology Department, Professor Laurie
Geffen of the Psychiatry Department and PhD student Anton Hinton-Bayre are
collaborating with the Club to study concussion or mild closed head injury
as it is also known.
Professor Gina Geffen said rugby league players had twice the head injury
rate of Australian rules and rugby union players. Head injuries in
league were caused equally by offensive play and defensive play, she said.
Symptoms of concussion included a loss of consciousness for up to two minutes
and a confused state lasting up to 24 hours, she said..
