University of Queensland researchers and Broncos Rugby League Club players are putting their heads together to understand the injuries
which result when players use theirs.

And the study of head injuries on the playing field may lead to rule or coaching changes. Professor Gina Geffen of the Psychology Department, Professor Laurie Geffen of the Psychiatry Department and PhD student Anton Hinton-Bayre are collaborating with the Club to study concussion or mild closed head injury as it is also known.

Professor Gina Geffen said rugby league players had twice the head injury rate of Australian rules and rugby union players. Head injuries in
league were caused equally by offensive play and defensive play, she said.

Symptoms of concussion included a loss of consciousness for up to two minutes and a confused state lasting up to 24 hours, she said..
