Preventing accidents check list for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and motor bike riders


» Children below the age of twelve should sit in the back seat with an approved safety seat belt.

» Passengers should enter and exit a car from the footpath.

» Talk and play quietly in order to not disrupt the driver’s concentration.

» Passengers must keep arms legs and the head inside the car at all times.

» Buses have black spots of around three metres at the front and rear of the bus. ‘Do not’ enter this area they cannot see you.

» Wait on the footpath until the bus has moved on.

» Look left and right and left again and when you feel it is safe to cross the road safely walk briskly and do not run.

» Never play games on the streets or roads..

» Pedestrians should always walk on the footpath facing the oncoming traffic

» Before riding your bicycle check your safety helmet for cracks or frayed webbing.

» Check tyre pressures.

» Make sure the seat is the right height so your feet can touch the ground.

» Check the chain for broken or damaged chain links.

» Check there is no damaged or broken wheel spokes in the front or back wheels.

» Check you bicycle light and rear reflector works.

» Make sure your bicycle pump works before setting out on your journey.

» Never ride your bicycle on the footpath.

» Always ride in single file on streets and roads.

» Wearing bright clothing, which makes you more visible to other road users.

» Be aware of motor vehicles coming out of driveways.

» Always obey traffic rules and signs.

» In the home environment a driver should take a few moments to walk around their car to check there are no children behind or underneath the vehicle.

» At the same time the driver can check the tyre pressures and for any foreign objects that if run over could cause a slow puncture and cause an accident whilst driving in traffic.

» Check drivers seat belt is operational and the release button is operational.

» Before starting your car put your seat belt on so that it is comfortable.

» Check seating position for rear view mirror and side mirrors in order to give an unobstructed view of following traffic.
